This piece isn't meant to be nice. Whenever I think about these events my heart and gut wrenches and the only way I can process these things is through music. I let myself think about what has happened and this music came out. When John first asked me to contribute a piece of music to this project I felt very uneasy about how to approach it. I couldn't write music that would inform any emotion for the audience, it is simply a musical reaction from my heart. Before I began work I pondered on the words of one of my mentors, Phil Treloar, when I asked him about the string quartet he wrote in tribute to the victims of a Japanese earthquake. He said something along the lines of "when writing music for or about a tragic event, one can't write music that confuses the audience about the tragedy, it can't seek to be happy, or moving, or guided, it simply must reflect the pure tragedy of the event that took place."
