The title references Adorno's quote of an Old German folk song: “My dearest spot that I have on earth / is the grassy patch by my parents' grave” and is a prelude to his 4th aphorism in Minima Moralia, which examines generational change, and its relationship with historical progress.

Adorno wrote Minima Moralia as a personal response to the rise of authoritarian ideologies embedded in the German idealist tradition, and was often criticized for it as a spoilsport, or a negative thinker, or too down-beat. This song reflects on the need to examine rebelliousness in its historical context, as a tool for positive change connected to history, and hopeful for a better future for all. At a time of post-political discourse where the reasonable (the harsh reality) has substituted the rational (the critical thinking), I wanted to recuperate Adorno's critical theory as a call for change, even revolutionary change, that builds on a tradition of solidarity and dissidence.

I also wanted to dedicate this song to my dear friend Stephan Atzert, a sensitive musician and an outstanding Adorno scholar who has provided much thought, critical examination, music, tea and snacks over the years.
